“Cinematic Storytelling” at CASE District VI conference

“Cinematic Storytelling” at CASE District VI conferencefeatured

I had the pleasure of presenting at the 2020 District VI conference of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

My topic was “Cinematic Storytelling for Higher Ed,” something I could talk about all day. I focused on the following:

  • What does it mean for a video to be cinematic?
  • What’s the difference between cinema and videography?
  • When is videography effective, and when do you need to employ deeper, cinematic storytelling techniques?
  • What is the most essential definition of a story?
  • What’s the relationship between the storyteller (brand, institution, etc.) and the audience?

And then we unpacked it all by talking through the following case studies: “Rise and Shine,” “Ensemble” and “The Moment Before.”

The CASE audience was a thoughtful group of higher education marketing and communications pros. They asked a range of questions — everything from process and timing to craft and metrics. It was a real joy to discuss this topic with them.

  • Slide from the presentation, which details the goal, message and challenges of the video "Ensemble." These challenges were met by using the cinematic tool single protagonist.
  • Slide from the presentation, which details the goal, message and challenges of the video "The Moment Before." These challenges were met by using the cinematic tool dual timeline.
